Pyrite, Quartz on Rhyolite
South Mineral Creek San Juan County Colorado
Description
Great large cabinet specimen of highly modified lustrous pyrite crystals from this new location (as of 2015). Collected at 13,000 feet after a 4 and 1/2 hour hike, these specimens are found in a single outcrop of bleached rhyolite, in amygdules filled with calcite. The calcite is removed with muriatic acid after we get the specimens home, and about 1 out of 3 specimens turn out to be pretty good. This deposit in out of one of the later volcanic eruptions that spread volcanic tuffs and rhyolites over hundreds of square miles in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado.
